Title: Kim Mahood: On Stilettos and Salt Lakes
Location: Pier 2/3 Curiosity Stage
Time: 11am - 11.40
Popular ideas of Central Australia are dominated by mythology and masculinity. Writer and artist Kim Mahood grew up in the country’s dusty interior and frequently returns to work with the Aboriginal people of the region. Here, she shares her collaboration with the late artist Pamela Lofts, which led to the creation of Violet Sunset, her desert alter ego. Violet is an adventurer in search of meaning among the ephemeral lakes of the interior and challenges popular conceptions of Central Australia.
Title: Memoir: A Slippery Art
Location: Philharmonia Studio, Pier 4/5 Hickson Road
Time: 1.30 - 2.30pm
The New Yorker’s Daniel Mendelsohn called memoir 'the black sheep of the literary family', riddled with self-exposure and the airing of personal laundry. So what are the rules for writing about one’s life. The authors of some extraordinary and varied works – Brentley Frazer (Scoundrel Days), Graeme Innes (Finding a Way) and Kim Mahood (Position Doubtful) – tell Catherine Eccles about their approach to this revealing form of writing.

Title: Creative Non-Fiction - What Is It and Why Write it?
Location: Science House, NYU Sydney
Time: 9.30-4.30pm
Creative non-fiction. What is it? Why write it? Literary journalism, stream-of-consciousness rant, tell-all memoir, discursive essay – creative non-fiction has entered the literary arena as one of the most dynamic forms of contemporary writing. How does the writer negotiate the issue of subjective truth and other people’s privacy. How ‘creative’ can you be before the work becomes fiction? Kim Mahood leads this workshop that discusses these questions and teaches basic self-editing principles.
On receipt of booking, we will ask you to confirm any special requirements, including access needs. While not all rooms in Science House are fully accessible, we are committed to ensuring that all participants can attend all workshops.
