Manuscript Submissions
Scribe is a trade publishing house (that is, we publish books for general readers that are made available nationally through the book trade). Accordingly, we only consider proposals for books of this nature. Until recently, we have been happy to accept unsolicited proposals for consideration. However, due to a continually increasing number of submissions, we have had to adopt a more stringent policy.
If you are a writer of fiction not represented by a literary agent, we are only able to consider unsolicited submissions if you have some publication history (e.g., if you have had short stories published in literary magazines), and/or you have won an award or prize or mentorship (e.g., a local short story prize, an ASA mentorship, a Varuna fellowship, etc.), and/ or your work comes with an endorsement from a published writer.
If you are a writer of non-fiction not represented by a literary agent, we are only able to consider unsolicited submissions if you have a demonstrated background of writing for general readers (for example, by having had books published by trade publishers, or by having had articles (not letters) published in newspapers or in journalistic outlets such as The Good Weekend, The Monthly, and The Bulletin).

If you and your work qualify for submission, please do not call, but e-mail info@scribepub.com.au with:
- a one-paragraph synopsis;
- an estimate of its word length and probable completion date if it is still in progress; and
- a CV and/or a summary of your previous publications/awards/recognition for your work.
- For fiction, please include a very short sample (max. 2000 words).
You'll also need to be frank with us about the submission history of your manuscript, and to tell us if your manuscript is under simultaneous consideration by other publishers.
We'll usually respond to your email proposal within two weeks. If we decide that we'd like to see more, we'll let you know precisely how much we'd like to read, and in what form.
