Scribe are thrilled to announce that Robin Gerster has won the Australian History Prize for his book Travels in Atomic Sunshine: Australia and the occupation of Japan .

The judges comments of Travels in Atomic Sunshine: ‘Gerster has a fascinating story to tell and he has done so in a lively and compelling narrative way that makes Travels in Atomic Sunshine accessible to readers well beyond the historical profession.’

‘I am delighted to win such a prestigious award, and grateful to the men, women and children of the post-war military occupation of Japan who so generously shared their experiences with me. The Occupation was a sometimes messy but ultimately salutary human and cultural event. I am especially pleased that it has been recognised that so-called ‘war stories’ involve more than battlefields and military hardware,’ said Gerster.

Travels in Atomic Sunshine is about the Australians who formed part of the British Commonwealth Occupational Forces after World War II in Japan – an occupation that brought out the best and the worst in the Australians.
