We Might As Well Win

on the road to success with the mastermind behind a record-setting eight Tour de France victories

Johan Bruyneel & Bill Strickland

'Johan is the Vince Lombardi of cycling. He has an uncanny ability to identify talent, nurture and support talent and allow every athlete to perform at his or her highest level. in a competitive setting, he is a brilliant strategist and tactician. Put simply, Johan has the complete tool kit for winning!'

Thomas W. Weisel, Founder and Chairman, USA Cycling Foundation

'A master tactician, Bruyneel had the job of deciding when Armstrong should attack and when he should holdback. If you're a cycling fan, this is a must-read, providing an insight into life on Le Tour. In a word: inspiring.'

(Herald Sun)

'Johan Bruyneel exudes success to such an extent he could inspire a tortoise to sprint. His tactical reflexes and sharp coaching eyes have honed his athletes into the most calculating winning machines of all time. As a cyclist, Bruyneel had rivals and he lost races, but as a coach he has found no rivals and as a professional team director he plots the route to success for those lucky enough to be guided by him. For anyone with ambition in both sport and life, this book will take you halfway up the ladder to success. The rest will, as always, be up to you.'

Phil Liggett, the world's most popular cycling commentator

This is a first-time look behind the scenes and inside the mind of Johan Bruyneel, the team director with the most wins in cycling history, and the strategist, confidant, motivator, and coach behind Lance Armstrong’s amazing success.

Johan Bruyneel knows what it takes to win. In 1998, this calculating Belgian and former pro cyclist looked struggling rider and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong in the eye and said, ‘Look, if were going to ride the tour, we might as well win.’

In that powerful phrase, a dynasty was born. With Bruyneel as his team director, Lance Armstrong seized a record seven straight Tour de France victories. In the meantime, Bruyneel brought innovation to the sport of cycling and went on to prove he could win without his superstar: in 2007, he took the Tour de France title with a young new team and a lot of nerve, sealing his place in sports history forever.

We Might as Well Win takes us behind the scenes of this amazing nine-year journey through the Alps and Pyrenees. We witness Bruyneel’s near-death crash and comeback as a rider. We are privy to the many ways he and Armstrong outsmarted their opponents, and we hear the secrets of eking the best out of a disparate team. We learn that not winning isn’t always losing, as Bruyneel struggles to prove himself post-Armstrong with new riders, new strategies, and sceptics around every corner.

Readers will relish this inside tour.

'In a sport where even the greatest riders and teams lose much more often than they win, Johan Bruyneel has carved out a remarkable record of victory as a team director -- and his honest, behind-the-scenes stories show the way to success in cycling and in life itself.'

Eddy Merckx, 5-time Tour de France winner

'Whenever I am asked about which athletic event I have enjoyed the most, the day I spent with Johan Bruyneel at the Tour de France in July of 2001 is always near the top of the list. Johan, on that day, was coach, driver, nutritionist, TV commentator and negotiator with cycling officialdom-all at a frenetic pace. He has now written a wonderful book on these experiences over the years, especially his unique relationship with Lance Armstrong. You’ll enjoy the read.'

Phil Knight, cofounder and Chairman, Nike, Inc

'Johan Bruyneel is a madman behind the wheel. He also speaks four or five languages and is the strategist behind one of the most amazing episodes of dominance in recent sports history. Eight Tour de France victories in 9 years! This book reveals how they did it, but more importantly, how me masterminded it by taking readers behind the scenes, into the follow car, on the bike, up the mountains, and against the clock. You have to lack a pulse not to be inspired.'
